Alaska Airlines and other options.

Alaska Airlines is Alaska’s number one airline with flights arriving from major cities all over the World. Alaska Airlines also has many relationships with other smaller airlines here in the state, so booking flights with Alaska Air is always a good choice.

I have consistently had very good experiences with Alaska Airlines and would recommend them. They are not, however, the only choice available. Many major airlines including American, Continental, United, Delta, and Northwest, among others have regular service to Anchorage.

Fairbanks and Juneau, our other major airports are both served by Alaska Airlines, which I believe is the only major U.S. carrier serving these cities.

Alaska Marine Highway Ferry System

Another way to get to the last frontier, is by taking our Marine Highway. The Alaska Marine Highway Ferry System provides passenger and vehicle transportation with ten ships visiting 33 ports along the coasts of Alaska. If you are traveling from the lower 48 states, you can board in Bellingham Washington or Prince Rupert, Canada. The southeast service is a spectacular trip through the Inside Passage. This service can take you as far north as Haines or Skagway.

Along the way you will make stops at places like Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan and many other smaller southeast communities.

From there you will need to either catch a flight or drive the rest of the way. The accommodations on this adventure is somewhere between a cross country bus ride and a cruise. While you are able to move around freely on these very large vessels, the dining is more limited and the entertainment is left to you. State rooms are available on some trips, or you can just travel coach. All in all this is a very scenic way to travel and a relatively inexpensive way to visit Alaska’s coastal communities.

Driving the Alaska-Canada Highway

Driving to Alaska is another great way to get here. The Al-Can Highway is very scenic and a chance to see wildlife and a little bit of Canada along the way. Depending on how you drive, and where you’re coming from, 4-7 days on the Al-Can is a reasonable expectation for the drive. Of course if you chose to drive, you’ll have transportation once you get here. Thousands each year bring Motorhomes or campers to Alaska and there are accommodations for them all along the way and once they get here.

Take A Cruise

Taking a cruise to Alaska is great idea. Alaska is one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world, and cruising to Alaska can be a great value. Look around for the many different Alaska cruise packages available. Most Alaska cruises will come through the inside passage and offer spectacular glacier and wildlife viewing. Be sure to book with a cruise that allows you to get off the boat and visit the many towns and cities. Whether you're flying Alaska Airlines or sailing or you chose to drive, traveling to Alaska is easier than ever. Bring your Camera.
