Alaska Map

Interior Alaska is a region of Alaska with some of it's largest Rivers and Mountains. The largest citiy in the Interior is Fairbanks, which sits along the banks of the Yukon River. The tallest mountain in North America is also nearby, Mt. McKinley and Denali National Park.

Southcentral Alaska is the most populated region in Alaska and where you'll find travel the easiest. Anchorage is the Hub of Alaska and you'll be able to access most of the rest of the state from here. The Kenai peninsula and the Matanuska Valley are just a few hours away via the road system or you can fly out to a more remote region form Anchorage. Other destinations in Southcentral are Palmer, Wasilla, Kenai, Homer, Seward, Soldotna, Glennallen, Chitna, Valdez and Talkeetna .

Southeast Alaska is the home of the Alaska capitol, Juneau. Southeast is unique in it's culture and remote nature. Most of southeast Alaska is accessible only by boat or plane. The native Indians, the Tlingits (pronounced klin-kits) are perhaps best known for their Totem Poles that have long been an Alaskan Trademark. Fishing, logging, and tourism keeps the people of southeast busy. Main destination points accessible by the airlines are Juneau, Sitka, or Ketchikan. Other smaller communities are also accesssible by plane or the ferry system. This is a great place for hiking, fishing, kayaking, or taking tours to get a feel for Alaska's storied past.

Western Alaska is a more remote portion of Alaska. Communities in western Alaska are accessible only by plane, with the exception being by boat to the coastal communities, but there are very few commercial opportunities to travel by boat. Plan on flying if you plan to visit this part of Alaska. Most communities in this region are subsistance type communities, relying heavily on the fishing and hunting opportunities to keep them going. Many Guides and Outfitters operate in this region, as the remoteness lends itself to a truly unique outdoor adventure. Plan on booking with a professional to get the information and services needed to travel this region. Hunting, Fishing, Float-trips and Sightseeing are this areas biggest draw.

The Arctic Region of Alaska is perhaps the most remote and inaccessible portion of Alaska. The only major road that traverses the Arctic region of alaska is the Haul Road or Daulton Highway. This is a major transportation route for access to the Oilfields of the North Slope of Alaska. The highways destination to the North is Deadhorse. This is basically a trip to the oilfields of Prudhoe Bay. If you have the time and the interest, this is a world class Oil production operation and is set against the Arctic Ocean. The Oil companies have done a wonderful job of producing oil and at the same time preserving the environment. Caribou and other arctic animals can be seen along the roads to and at the Oil fields. The last portion of the trip is very flat and very desolate, but offers a look at the North Slope of Alaska. Other more available trip options include a flight to Barrow, which is the largest city in the Arctic region, and has scheduled commercial flights. The Native culture is dominate and a real treat for those seeking a look at Alaska's native lifestyle. Bring your wallet, because nothing is inexpensive in this remote part of the world.
