Anchorage coastal Wildlife Refuge-Potter Marsh- Potter Section House Historic Site Just south of Anchorage on the Seward Highway is Potter's Marsh. This is a boardwalk through a wetland habitat with an opportunity for bird viewing, spotting animals and diverse wetland plant life. During the salmon season, watch as salmon return from sea to complete and restart the cycle of life. Just up the Road is the Potter Section House which was built in 1929 to maintain this section of the Alaska Railroad. Interesting facts on Alaska and it's very early history.
Crow Creek Gold Mine A real historical treat. Pan for Gold and explore eight original buildings from an 1888 Gold Camp. Highly recommended. Open mid-May through mid-September. 907-278-8060
Alyeska Resort A year round stop that is well worth your time. Alyeska Ski Resort is the heart of the city of Girdwood. A 5-star resort in a world class setting, Alyeska is an interesting mix of small town atmosphere and top notch Alaska style services. Ride the tram to the top of the mountain for a unique look at Alaska from the heights. Shopping and many tour opportunities. A year-round destination.
Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center Approximately 35 miles South of Anchorage on the Seward Highway. This is a drive-through wildlife viewing exhibit. See Moose, Elk, Deer, Buffalo and more.
Begich Boggs Visitors Center This is a visitors center focusing on Glaciers. Just on the entrance side of the 1.5 mile Whittier Tunnel, a must stop for those interested in glaciers. The Whittier tunnel runs on a one-hour east-west schedule. Plan to spend a little time at this interesting Visitors Center on your way to Whittier.
Phillips Cruises & Tours -26 Glacier Tour This is southcentral Alaska's Premier Glacier cruise. My wife and I have taken this cruise and as Alaskans have found it very enjoyable. Fort Richardson U.S. Army Base/Elmendorf Airforce Base Explore Alaska and U.S history at the Fort Rich National Cemetery, at the Fish Hatchery and Wildlife Museum. Elmendorf also has a Historical and wildlife Museum.
