Talkeetna, Alaska

Talkeetna is among the most unique of Alaskan communities, and is accessible from the Highway system. Set 115 miles north of Anchorage, just off the George Parks Highway, Talkeetna is a very small town known for it’s own distinctive style.

The main staging area for climbers of North America’s tallest mountain, Mt. McKinley, Talkeetna has an adventurous spirit all it’s own.

Original Roadhouses, Saloons and imaginative shops give this community it’s mystique. Three major waterways converge near town, the Susitna, Chulitna, and Talkeetna rivers, offering spectacular viewing of vast expances on a backdrop of the Alaska range, including Mt. McKinley.

Flightseeing, fishing, river rafting and boat tours are all offered in this little town. The Talkeetna Historical Society Museum offers history on mountain climbing as well as the story of this unique region. Talkeetna is perhaps the best look at what Alaska might have looked like in the 1960’s, holding on to the past and resisting commercialization. It’s well worth your time to visit this little town.
