Valdez Alaska

Valdez is one of my favorite travel destinations. The road to Valdez is very scenic and a must see if you enjoy big waterfalls. Thompsons pass, on your way to Valdez, offers a chance to see wildlife, unique Alaskan landscapes and the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline. Valdez is most popular amongst Alaskans for it's hiking, skiing, and fishing in Prince William Sound. I highly recommend a visit to Valdez if you're touring Alaska in your vehicle.

Stan Stephans Glacier & Wildlife Cruises-Exploring Prince William Sound since 1971, Stan Stevens Cruises provide a top-notched tour. See Columbia glacier, marine life, mainland wildlife, and awesome Alaskan seascapes. Highly recommended.
Valdez Museum-Lots of local art and history packed in this charming Museum. See a restored 1907 Fire Engine, an illuminated model of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, Gold Rush history and a lot more.
Small Boat Harbor- Like many of Alaska's coastal communities, Valdez has made their small boat harbor a central attraction. Stroll along the docks and check out the boats, watch as fisherman bring in the day's catch, or visit some of the nearby shops. A great place to get the local fishing report.
Fishing Charters-A small fleet of charter boats leave Port each morning seeking fish of many kinds. Halibut, Silver Salmon, and Ling Cod are among the most popular. Very scenic and productive when the salmon are running.
Heli-skiing-Five local guide companies operate in the winter, flying extreme skiers into the Chugach Mountains. This is world class skiing and truly extreme.
Valdez Silver Salmon Derby-Fishing for cash and prizes, what can be more fun. Win thousands of dollars in Valdez's annual fishing derby. Fish from the bank or take a boat. Charters are available or boat rentals can be found in the small boat harbor. This can be one of Alaska's hottest fishing spots. Great fun.
Gold Rush Days-Generally held in early August, this 5-day event celebrates the origin of the gold seekers that filled Valdez in 1897-98. This annual event features a parade, a free fish fry, a hoosegow, the Gold Rush Days King and Queen coronation, and the 'Gone to the Dogs' costume ball. If you're in the area, plan on being there.
