Wasilla, Alaska
Wasilla is one of Alaska's fastest growing areas. Located just 45 miles north of Anchorage, Wasilla is seen by many as a great opportunity to live in a more recreational region while still being able to work in Anchorage. Wasilla is located across Cook Inlet just below the foothills of the Talkeetna mountains. Wasilla prides itself in being the Home of the Iditarod Trail Headquarters, and the starting point of the Tesoro Irondog Snowmobile Race. These are two of Alaska's largest wintertime events.
Originally Wasilla was the center point of the Carle Wagon Trail, that ran from Knik through Wasilla, to Independence Gold Mine in Hatchers Pass. Today it has become the commerce center for the Matanuska Valley, and is a gateway to the interior via the George Parks Highway. Many opportunities for fishing and sightseeing are available from Wasilla.
Dorothy Page Museum and Old Town Site-This is Wasilla's visitors information center. Also learn of the areas formative years, including the early 20th century mining history.
Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Headquarters- This is the Home of the world's best-known Sled Dog Race. Located 2.2 mile up Knik Road, the headquarters are filled with rich Iditarod History. This race brings together Alaska's heritage, lifestyles and adventurous spirit. Enjoy mushing films, a Gift Shop and even Sled Dog rides. (907) 376-5155 Highly recommended.
Museum of Alaska Transportation & Industry- A 10 acre display of Military and Pioneer Aircraft, Mining Equipment, Railroad Engines, Antique cars and much more. (907)376-1211.
Iditapark- Skate park and Wonderland Playground. Iditapark, a skateboard park that also features a BMX bicycle track, basketball and tennis courts. Wonderland Park is an extensive children's playground. Lots of fun for the kids and the young at heart. Downtown Wasilla.
Fishing on the Little Susitna River- About 15 mile down Knik Road, is a favorite fishing stream. The Little Su produces good runs of both King and Silver salmon. You can find it yourself, or there are many good guide services available. I'd recommend Fishtale River Guides. 1-800-376-3625
Hatcher Pass- Plan a day trip to Hatcher Pass and Independence Mine. Visit a historical Gold Mine from the early 1900's. If you enjoy hiking, hatcher pass offers alpine trails and fanastic viewing of the Matanuska Valley from a birds eye view. A good chance to hike in Alaska's mountains to alpine lakes.
